Appy Friday!

InfiniScroll – An Unusual and Delightful App

InfiniScroll by Curious Hat is an unusual app which is at once delightfully appealing in style and design and open-ended enough to prompt many ideas for use. This is a never-ending collection of charming illustrations which shift and change as you scroll up and down, unless you lock one in place. Add sound effects or tell a story for each panel of your story… this one will hook you and your children! It is so creative!

InfiniScroll is really unlike any other app I have seen. The interface is quite simple, allowing for even very young children to explore it successfully. The app begins with a “picture panel” like the one shown below:

The choices are simple. Examine the picture and if you want to add narration or sound effects hold down the microphone and it will give you a infiniscrollstorycountdown and then you can record your sound or words. If you are certain you want this picture as part of your scroll you can tap on the lock. If you scroll up to the next panel and then return to this panel the image will have changed unless you have locked this one in place. As children explore the crazy, innovative images and scroll back and see the earlier panels have changed the giggles ensue.

After lots of exploration and discussion children CAN lock in the entire series of panels (5 in total) and create an image like the one shown on the right. Each panel which has audio recorded with it maintains that audio as well (Those without user-created audio will actually have a little snippet of sound provided by the developers). A touch of the “Curious Hat” icon leads to a menu of choices which is a little more advanced and may require some discussion with young learners:

At the “Curious Hat” menu (shown here with its orange background)  you can save the creation as an image (no audio) or as a movie to your camera roll which makes it very easy to share and re-use these creations. You should notice, that on a shared iPad the audio tracks can be erased by any user on this menu, so encourage your children to save their work to the camera roll as a video to be certain to keep the work.

Beyond the obvious use of this app to give children opportunities for creative expression, I think this is a nice place to explore the idea of non-linear storytelling.  You could have students choose a panel and record a rhyme they create for that panel (using a word family you pick,  like -at or -im) , then you can play the “poem” they created by moving from random panel to random panel… What fun! This also could be a catylist for off tablet creation of folded story starters  (like described here: ) The built-in “Tip” icon on the menu screen offers some ideas which are worth exploring as well.
